Day Two

Everything is ready, no scrambling. Ed goes out first.

Goddammit! Fueling problem again.

Okay. The Taurus in-tank pump is good. The pressure pump makes unpleasant noises. Could have been toasted due to trying too hard to draw fuel from the broke feeder pump. Thought about bypassing it as the Taurus pump ought to be high pressure (tho maybe not the 43psi we need). But we needed fittings (nylon fuel line). Jeremy remembered Chuck saying that the hi press pump was replaced not due to failure but just as a precaution. We have the old pump. Quick test shows it flows and doesn’t sound ganked. Installed it, put sender back in. Go!

Scott’s times are slow, 10-15 sec off the other drivers. This implies that the car is broken. Again. Next attempt is bypass the fuel filter.

So Scott was supposed to come in at 11:46, but it was running so poorly that he came in 10min early and then the car died. Next driver (Jeremy) was peeing and do not suited up. Oops. So Bjorn and Ed quick got dressed out to refuel the car in the hot pits (safety requirement). Some fellow lemoners helped push the car. After adding fuel, Bjorn got in and the car started.

Update: woo hoo! With a full tank Bjorn is making some fast laps. 1:34.3 just now. So for our last 2 driver changes we’ll add 5gal just to make sure the car is fun.

Plus they partnered with Over-Engineered Racing who brought a smoker and fed us delicious BBQ. It’s part of a benefit for childhood cancer. Thanks!

Minor Troubles

So the “fueling” problem that severely impacted the car on the tight uphill corner got worse and worse. The car started stalling and sputtering and misfiring much worse and all over the track. Keith suspected ignition. He ordered a new coil – Autozone delivers to the friggin track. Meanwhile Jeremy went out and proceeded to set new records for slow laps and got passed by pretty much every car out there. Sucky. But we pulled the car in and swapped out the coil in record time. Seems to have fixed things as Scott is out on the track and the car isn’t constantly sputtering and backfiring. We’re currently 16th out of 78 cars. Here’s hoping things continue to go smoothly.

Update: Scott came in and said that no, it’s not fixed. Still popping, no power.

2nd update: we finished the race in 15th place. The Volvo guys from the Keystone Kops / Alex’s Lemonade team diagnosed our problem: bad feeder pump. This was brand new as of Lemons ’09. Anyway – fixable.

So even though this is the 3rd time I’ve done this and probably the 5th time the team has done it, it still took me an hour to put this sender back in! Pita.

Update 3: everything back together and started it up! Also JBwelded the hole in the compressor housing of the turbo. And Scott remounted the big rearview mirror.
